An estimated 80,000,000 Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day, using enough aluminum foil to cover over 50 acres of space - that's almost 40 football fields. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it.

The U.S. is the #1 trash-producing country in the world at 1,609 pounds per person per year. This means that 5% of the world's people generate 40% of the world's waste.

If today is a typical day on the planet, humans will add fifteen million tons of carbon to the atmosphere, destroy 115 square miles of tropical rainforest, create 72 square miles of desert, destroy between 40 to 100 species, erode 71 million tons of topsoil, add 2,700 tons of CFCs to the stratosphere, and increase their population by 263,000.

Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1,000,000 sea creatures every year!

The 36 billion aluminum cans that went into a landfill last year had a scrap value of more than $600 million. (Some day we'll be mining our landfills for the resources we've buried.)

About one-third of an average dump is made up of packaging material!

A modern glass bottle would take 4000 years or more to decompose & even longer if it's in the landfill.

Glass never wears out.  It can be recycled forever. We save over a ton of resources for every ton of glass recycled (1,330 pounds of sand, 433 pounds of soda ash, 433 pounds of limestone, and 151 pounds of feldspar).

On average, it costs $30 per ton to recycle trash, $50 to send it to the landfill, and $65 to $75 to incinerate it.

Each year, American threw away 25 billion Styrofoam cups, enough every year to circle the earth 436 times. It is un-recyclable…you can't make it into new Styrofoam. DON’T BUY IT!

On average, each one of us produces 4.4 pounds of solid waste each day. This adds up to almost a ton of trash per person, per year.

Americans dump the equivalent of more than 21 million shopping bags full of food into landfills every year.

Out of every $10 spent buying things, $1 (10%) goes for packaging that is thrown away. Packaging represents about 65% of household trash.

Nearly eight out of every 10 bottles will end up in a landfill.

For every1 ton of plastic that is recycled we save the equivalent of 2 people’s energy use for 1 year, the amount of water used by 1 person in 2 month’s time and almost 2000 pounds of oil.

You will see about 1,457 pieces of litter, if you walk a mile along an average highway in the United States.

Almost four million computer diskettes are thrown away every day, which equals over one & a half billion disks per year or a stack of disks as tall as the Sears Tower in Chicago every 21 seconds. It will take nearly 500+ years for the disks to degrade.

The average person throws away 4 pounds of garbage per day.

Each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000 gallons of water. This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings, and 60 pounds less of air pollution!

Did you know that battery acid can be recycled by converting it to sodium sulfate for glass and textile manufacturing

A baby on an average, generates a ton of garbage a year.

Every year we make enough plastic film to shrink-wrap the state of Texas.  Then we put it into a landfill.  Recycling 1 ton of plastic saves 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space.

If every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we would save about 25,000,000 trees a year.

An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now!  There is no limit to the amount of times that aluminum can be recycled.

Surveys routinely show that more than 90 percent of consumers reuse their plastic bags at least once for things like wastebasket liners, lunch totes and pet pickup.

Most shampoo, lotion, and cosmetic products come in #2 plastic bottles—all are recyclable but lids/caps must be removed.

Visit www.nikereuseashoe.com – Old tennis shoes are grinded down and put “back in the game” as playing fields, tracks, basketball courts, etc

The National Crayon Recycle Program melts down crayons and reforms them into new ones.

Approximately 2 billion disposable razors are thrown into landfills each year. Consider using a rechargeable electric razor.

Remove caps & lids from water bottles or they will not be recycled. Bottle caps are a different plastic than the bottle.

Americans use 25 million plastic bottles every hour – and most of them are thrown away and those bottles will take over 1000 years to biodegrade in a landfill! If every American household recycled one of every 10 water bottles they used, we could keep 20 million pounds of plastic out of the landfills each year.

Local Lions Clubs recycle eye glasses and provide usable eye glasses to children and adults throughout the world. Local eye care chains may also collect them, such as LensCrafters, Target Optical, or other participating stores and doctors’ offices, and send them to www.givethegiftofsight.org.
